How to Design a Pet-Friendly Yard

dog-friendly landscapingWe recently shared some tips for designing a family-friendly backyard, but what about your furry family members? If you want to make sure your dog enjoys your landscaping as much as the humans in the household, check out these tips for dog-friendly landscaping.

  • Know your dog– Each breed has its own unique characteristics, and each dog has a one-of-a-kind personality. Work with those factors, rather than against them, and both you and your dog will enjoy the space much more. Think about whether you and Fido will be playing fetch, practicing agility, or just romping around. This may affect the size of your lawn, placement of plantings, etc.
  • Provide variety- If your dog will be spending a substantial amount of time outside in the yard, be sure to provide a variety of hangout spots, from hard to soft and shady to sunny.
  • Aim for comfort- You may not walk around your landscaping barefoot very often, but your dog certainly will! Go easy on canine toes with walkway materials like mulch and smooth pebbles.
  • Be realistic- Steer clear of particularly fragile plants, or at least try to locate them out of the way of your dog’s main play areas.

Owning a pet is time-consuming, but also incredibly rewarding. Make more time for fun with your canine companion by leaving the yardwork to the experts at our Gainesville lawn care company.
